Member Training: How blended finance supports project finance transactions in West Africa

Project financing is critical for the delivery of crucial utility-scale services that enable development in low and middle-income countries. However, the underlying demand and supply-side risks, such as uncertain off-take/distribution capacity, affordability of infrastructure services to end users, and currency devaluation, among others can impact the project’s cash flows and viability. Blended finance offers a financial structuring approach that can leverage concessional capital to manage these risks, helping transactions get off the ground and mobilize private capital.

This webinar featured two Convergence members, West African Development Bank and InfraCredit Nigeria and one partner organization, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund. These three organizations have successfully supported various infrastructure projects in West Africa using a variety of concessional and commercial instruments. The session began with a brief overview from each organization, followed by a panel discussion with the representatives.

Featured speakers:

  • Joseph Diabate Djigui, Head of Financial Planning, West African Development Bank
  • Chidi Mike-Eneh, Head of Credit Risk, InfraCredit Nigeria
  • Kwadwo Kwakwe Gyan, Head, Risk Management and Sustainability, Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund
