GEMs, known as the Global Emerging Markets Risk Database Consortium, is one of the largest credit risk database for the emerging markets operations, serving MDBs and DFIs.
This report published by GEMs offers an overview of the credit risks of private and sub-sovereign borrowers in emerging markets and developing economies from 1994 to 2022. The main objective is to provide insights into markets where it is difficult to find reliable credit information.
Key findings from the report include:
- Private borrower recovery rates averaged at 74.7%, while sub-sovereign borrowers saw higher rates at 91%.
- Recovery rates varied among regions: Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest rate for private borrowers (83%), while South Asia had the lowest (68.1%). For sub-sovereign borrowers, Europe and Central Asia had the highest rate (99.1%), and East Asia and the Pacific had the lowest (85%).
